  • Feedwater chemistry at the actual recovery and concentrate conditions
  • Normalised performance and trends rather than raw snapshots alone
  • Likely fouling mechanism and any shortcomings in pretreatment
  • Compatibility of antiscalant, cleaning chemicals and membrane type

  • Normalised permeate flow, feed pressure and pressure drop per stage
  • Salt passage, salt rejection and permeate conductivity
  • Pressure drop across prefilters and relevant SDI or turbidity trends
  • Recovery after CIP and the rate at which performance declines again

Technical choices require system context

These answers provide initial direction. The final approach follows from the installation data and product documentation.

When does an RO system need cleaning?

Not on a calendar basis alone. Use normalised flow, pressure drop and salt passage, and follow the membrane supplier's cleaning criteria. Delaying too long can limit recovery.

Can an antiscalant be selected on hardness alone?

No. Recovery, pH, alkalinity, silica, metals, temperature and concentrate concentrations also determine the risk.

Is one membrane cleaner sufficient for every type of fouling?

No. Mineral, organic and microbiological fouling often require different chemistry, sequence, pH, temperature and contact time.
